Taylor Kent’s Top Five

By: Taylor Kent

For locals and tourists alike, next time you’re feeling tired of spending, check out our list of the top 5 free things to do around the island!

Bike Paths

A distinguishing feature of the island, Hilton Head’s many bike paths stretch from the north end to the south end, and can be found practically everywhere in between. They allow easy access to the entire island, while also promoting exercise and an eco-friendly lifestyle. Given the ever-intrepid driving style of most tourists, we highly recommend for island newbies to ditch the cars and instead opt to consider our lovely bike paths. *Note: If you have an O-HHI-O sticker on your minivan, this is most likely aimed towards you.

Beach

Yes, it’s predictable, but sometimes, nothing can beat a good beach day. Grab your chairs and pack your coolers, because a trip to the ocean is actually quite healing on the human body. There are several proven health benefits of swimming in salt water. I can’t unfortunately, say the same about drinking Coronas, but it’s ll about the balance, right?

Live Music

Listening to live music is the best way to spend an evening on the island after a day in the sun. We are lucky to have several venues that offer shows on a regular basis. Coligny Plaza, Shelter Cove Park, and Harbor Town all frequently host professional local entertainers and bands. They are free to anyone except for middle aged men in sandals who yell out “Free Bird”.

Nature Preserves And Parks

Hilton Head has a wide variety of wildlife that can be seen at any of the island’s conservancies or parks. With hundreds of trees, layers of Spanish moss, and trails beneath your feet, these parks are the perfect escape from reality. Notable places to visit include the Sea Pines Forest Preserve and Pinckney Island. Just don’t get too close to the alligators.

Thrifting And Art Galleries

Thrift store hopping is the perfect way to beat the heat or stay indoors on a rainy day. The island has many consignment shops as well as art galleries full of hidden treasures that capture Hilton Head’s whimsical feel. If you find yourself in the mood for something different, venture out to Old Town Bluffton and visit the artsy, locally owned businesses, including my favorite, Eggs-N-Tricities.
