Southender Sandwich Showdown – Sandbar Beach and Eats

By: Matt Stock

With the season coming into full swing and temperatures on the rise, we decided it was about time for a Sandwich Showdown at one of the hottest spots on the South End, Sandbar Beach Eats, located right off the Coligny circle, right in the heart of the action. After opening two years ago, this joint has really hit its stride this year as a popular destination for not only tourists, but local music fans and especially food and beverage employees, who have made Sandbar an epic Sunday Funday hang spot as of late.

After participating in one of said Sunday sessions, I found myself back at Sandbar the following afternoon, feeling a little groggy and packing a serious case of the hangover munchies. I bellied up to the bar with my Sandwich Bro Cranford and we were soon warmly greeted by proprietor Erika Waronsky , who gave us a look up and down and realized we needed some good bar sandwiches, and FAST. As is our standard protocol, we asked Erika to recommend her two favorite sandwiches, and she offered up her picks with little hesitation. We soon found ourselves face to face with the “Son of a Bun”, a double smash burger with American cheese, sauteed onions, pickles and burger sauce, and the “Rajun Cajun”, a marinated and blackened beef tenderloin sandwich on a hoagie roll, smothered with Swiss cheese, sauteed peppers and onions, and horseradish mayo.

Both these sandwiches were looking GOOD, and we figured we were in for another tight race, as we’re both certified burger junkies. However, while the “Son of a Bun” most definitely satisfied, we each took one bite of the Rajun Cajun and knew we had an upset on our hands.  The tenderloin was perfectly cooked and flavorful, with the cajun seasoning level just right and only a LITTLE bit spicy. Paired with a perfectly toasted bun and the truly bangin’ horseradish mayo, this sandwich was rocking serious, mad flavor and took the belt after one bite! Get up to this hot spot as soon as possible and try these sandwiches, along with many other tasty options, as soon as possible. If it’s a Sunday, we’ll probably see you!
