Summer Songs From Local Artists

Call me a romantic, but I’m a firm believer that when summer rolls around each year, everything gets a little better. It’s like clockwork, really. Even amidst the stifling humidity and merciless noseeums, there always exists a hopeful feeling in the air that just seems to make things feel happier. As a musician, I might be biased, but it seems to me that music and summertime go hand in hand. It just makes sense. “Summer music” is always light and carefree, like coasting down the south end with the windows rolled down. Next time you’re cruising to the beach or the ice cream shop, try out these 5 songs by local artists to complement your drive.

“Underground”- Pretty Darn

A favorite amongst islanders, what would this list be without some Pretty Darn? “Underground” is the first track off of their 2018 album, Brothers, and the band’s easygoing harmony weaving through percussion gives the song a relaxed feel that’s perfect for summer.

“Sunchaser”- The Storks

Listen to a mere ten seconds of this song and I swear you’ll almost be able to taste sweet coconut on your lips and feel the sand wedged between your toes. “Sunchaser” is the ultimate beach song, and it’s guaranteed to make you long for the salty crash of ocean waves.

“O Haleakala”- Trevor Hall

A Hilton Head native, Trevor Hall’s distinct, laid-back approach as a singer-songwriter has allowed him much success in the music world. The lighthearted melody and sweet message found in “O Haleakala” gained the Hawaiian-inspired song a spot on our list.

“Shine (Danny Boy)”- Cranford Hollow

The very core of the lowcountry’s music scene, it’s safe to say that if you’re local, you’re familiar with Cranford Hollow. The upbeat “Shine (Danny Boy)” comes from the band’s 2014 album Spanish Moss and Smoke. The song begins with a light kick drum, and a folk-y, summer vibe is introduced and later emphasized by the classic combination of acoustic guitar and fiddle.

“Frosty Frog”- Spiritual Gangsters

Listen to this song one time and I guarantee that you won’t be able to forget it. It’s pretty much impossible to not want to bob your head and sing along. Plus, coming up with rap lyrics for an entire menu of food is strangely impressive. I know I couldn’t do it. Frosty Frog is Hilton Head’s classic summer spot, and this song is the perfect way to close out our list.
