Artists United

I’m standing in a very hip, bright, high-ceilinged room that is truly a feast for the senses. I am greeted by intricate wood carvings of different shapes and sizes. I can hear a pottery wheel spinning in the back room. Intricate jewelry adorns small racks. Paintings leap out at me from every wall. Abstracts, portraiture, steel overlaid on canvas, even a colorful painting of a Boston Terrier flanked by two lizards, all demand my attention. The creative energy is palpable, and the vibe is comforting, yet exciting.

Welcome to Bo Art, the immersive art experience our island needs. Bo Art opened its doors in January as a non-profit cooperative gallery, housing 8 resident artists and several revolving ‘showing’ artists. Visiting and resident artists can use the pottery & woodworking studios, and classes are planned for the future.

Gallery manager and resident artist Logan Edelman and his colleagues have a unified vision “to inspire the community to come together and create.” Bo Art’s makers studio and gallery will be on full display at its Art Noir Black Tie Gala on March 9th. It hopes to use the Gala as a major fundraiser for additional equipment that will be available for the community to use. “It is designed to showcase what it means to have an arts community in Hilton Head that’s working in a collaborative way,” says Edelman.

March will also bring the launch of public workshops, where students can study in all available mediums, and, once certified, be eligible for monthly memberships where all of the space’s resources will be available to them. “It’s almost like a gym membership,” explains Edelman.

The creative mind is our most powerful muscle, friends! Go flex it at Bo Art!

Bo Art, located at 19 Dunnigans Alley, is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM. For more information, follow them on Facebook or at boarthhi.com.
